Chapter 17: Crash

Riley managed to stand. "We have PKers!" he yelled. "Shadow turned on us!"

The rest of the group was still engaged with the hellions, but with the arrival of Shade, and the truth behind Shadow's intentions, they were now fighting a two-sided battle. Riley hadn't imagined that Shade and Shadow might be working with the hellions. Had Shade been nearby the entire time? Was he cloaked? Did Shadow wait for the most opportune time to turn on them? Riley couldn't believe how stupid he was. Shadow had fooled him, or at the very least, Shade had found them here in the hellion's lair and Shadow decided to take her chances at PKing them and stealing their gear. Because what other reason would she have for the deception?

Riley couldn't see where Shadow was. It was likely that she'd hidden amongst the trees. With her power over shadows, she'd be able to mostly conceal herself while still being a severe detriment to them.

Shade ran for Riley, his shadowy fists pumping in the air, mimicking his actual movements.

Riley lifted his right hand and fired off the remaining three blasts from his glove. The first beam missed, barely an inch from Shade's arm. One of those shadowy hands came down and shielded him as he advanced. The next two beams smacked into the dark palm protecting him. Riley couldn't solo Shade, not with his powers.

A streak of fire cut across the clearing and buffeted Shade. He was knocked to the side, having taken a full blast of fire from the gargoyle above. There was no way for him to know how much damage it had done to Shade, but he could only hope that it was substantial, since he hadn't seen it coming.

Riley couldn't help but smile. It meant that the hellions weren't working with them. He quickly reached out with his other hand and stole more essence from the blue lobster that was still fighting toe to toe with Ava. Which was impressive, given the fact that Ava wasn't a paragon, and hellions generally were on par with paragons, whether they were tier-two monsters or not.

He didn't waste any time in directing his beam glove back at Shade. "I need help with this guy!" he yelled as he let loose a torrent of beams from his glove. The blasts smacked into Shade's body and fists, as he quickly took a defensive posture to protect himself from both Riley and the apparent threat of the gargoyle.

In the corner of his eye, Riley caught that dark movement. He turned his head and spotted the shadows rushing toward him from the treeline. They were further away this time, but they would be on him in seconds. He had just a couple shots left in his glove. He directed it at the encroaching shadows and fired.

The beams of light smacked into the ground, causing the shadows to disperse in a several-foot area around the impacts. It slowed the shadows, but by no means did it stop them.
